* WHAT. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for fine particles pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Red or Unhealthy category. * WHERE. Southern Minnesota. * WHEN. Until 11 PM CDT this evening. * IMPACTS. Some members of the general public may experience health effects. Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, may experience health effects. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS. Heavy smoke will linger across southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities metro though the day on Monday. This band of smoke will slowly drift to the south throughout the day and air quality will begin improving from north to south within the alert area. Air quality should improve across the Twin Cities metro during the afternoon and the rest of southern Minnesota can expect improving air quality by the end of the day.

The Iowa DNR has issued an Air Quality Alert for the northernmost four tiers of counties west of I-35 as well as the northernmost tier of counties east of I-35 through 11 pm tomorrow. Smoke from Canadian wildfires has entered the region from the north and fine particulate levels at or above the national standard can be expected. The DNR recommends that people avoid long or intense outdoor activities, and take more breaks during outdoor activities until air quality conditions improve. Members of sensitive groups may wish to take additional precautions. Sensitive groups include people with respiratory or heart disease, children, teenagers, the elderly, and outdoor workers. This alert will expire at 11 pm Tuesday
