The combination of low relative humidity between 25 and 30 percent, south winds 10 to 15 mph gusting over 20 mph, and drying fuels, will increase the potential for the spread of fires from through early this evening. People should exercise caution handling any potential ignition sources, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Any fires that ignite in dry grasses and tree litter will have the potential to spread quickly

The combination of low relative humidity between 25 and 30 percent and south winds gusting around 20 mph will result in an enhanced risk of wildfire spread. If any fires were to start the weather and fuel conditions could cause fires to quickly get out of control and be difficult to contain. The annual NY statewide burn ban is in effect until May 14th. No burn permits are issued.

Dry conditions with gusty winds are expected across the region today. Minimum relative humidity values will drop as low as 20 percent in some areas with south to southwest wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph during the afternoon. Although this Spring has been wet, fine fuels such as dead grass and leaf litter will quickly dry out in these conditions. If any fires were to start, the windy and dry weather will increase the risk of wildfire spread, making it difficult to contain. Residents are urged to exercise caution if handling any potential ignition sources, such as machinery, cigarettes, or matches. If dry grasses and tree litter begin to burn, the fire will have the potential to spread rapidly. The combination of low relative humidity between 25 and 30 percent, south winds 10 to 15 mph gusting over 20 mph, and drying fuels, will increase the potential for the spread of fires from around midday until around sunset. Conditions may be even more conducive to fire growth and spread Wednesday afternoon and early evening following a cold frontal passage, with relative humidity falling to 25 to 30 percent and west winds gusting to 25 to 30 mph. This will depend on whether any wetting rain occurs with the frontal passage. People should exercise caution handling any potential ignition sources, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Any fires that ignite in dry grasses and tree litter will have the potential to spread quickly.
