The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has issued an Air Quality Action Day for Ground Level Ozone, from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT Thursday. Unhealthy levels of ozone can cause throat irritation, coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, increased susceptibility to respiratory infection, and aggravation of asthma and other respiratory ailments, especially with children and the elderly. These symptoms are worsened by outdoor exercise and heavy activity. * Reduce prolonged or heavy exertion. * Take more breaks, do less intense activities. * Watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath. * People with asthma should follow their asthma action plans and keep quick relief medicine handy. * Schedule outdoor activities in the morning when ozone levels are lower. Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS. - At 429 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the warned area.
