SMWLWX The National Weather Service in Sterling Virginia has issued a * Special Marine Warning for. Tidal Potomac from Indian Head to Cobb Island MD. Tidal Potomac from Key Bridge to Indian Head MD. * Until 330 PM EDT. * At 131 PM EDT, strong thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 36 nm northwest of Key Bridge to 36 nm northwest of Leesylvania State Park to 37 nm northwest of Quantico to 49 nm west of Aquia Creek, moving east at 25 knots. HAZARD. Wind gusts 34 knots or greater and small hail. SOURCE. Radar indicated. IMPACT. Boaters in small craft could be thrown overboard by suddenly higher winds and waves capsizing their vessel. * Strong thunderstorms will be near. Key Bridge around 245 PM EDT. Mason Neck State Park, Quantico, Occoquan Bay, Tidal Basin, Leesylvania State Park, and Alexandria around 250 PM EDT. Fort Hunt, Gunston Hall, Woodrow Wilson Bridge, Reagan National Airport, and Widewater around 255 PM EDT. Fort Washington, Smallwood State Park, Indian Head, Brent Point, and National Harbor around 300 PM EDT. Potomac Creek around 305 PM EDT. Fairview Beach and Maryland Point around 315 PM EDT. Other locations impacted by strong thunderstorms include Widewater.

Showers and thunderstorms are forecast this afternoon. Some storms may produce gusty winds to gale force, small hail, lightning strikes, and locally higher waves and reduced visibility. Squalls are expected to approach the upper tidal Potomac River by around 2:30 PM, then progress eastward at around 25 to 30 knots crossing the upper Chesapeake Bay, tidal Patapsco River, and middle tidal Potomac River between 3:00 and 4:00 PM. Squalls will cross the middle portions of the Chesapeake Bay, tidal Patuxent River, and lower tidal Potomac River between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, then cross the waters off southern Maryland between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Additional isolated activity is possible between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Mariners should remain alert if navigating the waters this afternoon, and be prepared to seek safe harbor quickly should hazardous weather threaten or Special Marine Warnings be issued.
