The officials at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management have declared an Air Quality Action Day, IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY NIGHT TO MIDNIGHT EDT THURSDAY NIGHT. An Air Quality Action Day for Ozone has been issued. Ozone levels are expected to be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range. Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor exposure. Here are some recommended actions that the public can take: * Walk, bike, carpool or use public transportation. * Avoid using the drive-through and combine errands into one trip. * Avoid refueling your vehicle or using gasoline-powered lawn equipment until after 7pm. * Turn off your engine when idling for more than 30 seconds. * Conserve energy by turning off lights or setting the air conditioner to 75 degrees or above. * WHAT. Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of 95 to 102 through Friday. Low temperatures in the 70s at night will provide little relief from the heat. * WHERE. Portions of northern Indiana and northwest Ohio. * WHEN. Until 8 PM EDT Friday. * IMPACTS. Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS. Heat stress increases with the number of consecutive hot days. Peak afternoon heat indices may be more variable today due to potential isolated thunderstorms, but hot conditions are forecast again for Thursday through Saturday. The effects of heat are most impactful for more vulnerable urban populations.
