Detailed Description MIDDLE TANANA VALLEY- 902 AM AKDT THU JUL 21 2016 THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN FAIRBANKS HAS EXTENDED THE FLOOD ADVISORY FOR... CHENA RIVER FROM NORTH POLE UPSTREAM... UNTIL 245 PM AKDT SUNDAY FROM 0.5 TO OVER 1 INCH OF RAIN FELL OVER PORTIONS OF THE CHENA RIVER BASIN SINCE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. AN ADDITIONAL 0.5 INCH OF RAIN IS POSSIBLE TODAY. THE CHENA RIVER IS ALREADY BANKFULL AND ABOVE FLOOD STAGE IN SOME LOCATIONS DUE TO HEAVY RAIN THAT FELL EARLIER THIS WEEK. THE RECENT RAINFALL IS EXPECTED TO RUNOFF QUICKLY INTO THE RIVER DUE TO THE SATURATED SOILS IN THE BASIN. AS OF 9 AM THURSDAY...THE CHENA RIVER AT THE GRANITE TORS CAMPGROUND HAS CLIMBED BACK UP TO MINOR FLOOD STAGE OF 19.5 FEET AND IS FORECAST TO CREST AROUND 20.0 FEET ON FRIDAY MORNING. THIS CREST WILL CONTINUE DOWNRIVER INTO THE WEEKEND AND THE CHENA RIVER UPSTREAM OF THE MOOSE CREEK DAM WILL RISE TO MINOR FLOOD STAGE AGAIN. WATER HAS INUNDATED MANY OF THE RIVER ACCESS ROADS IN THE CHENA RIVER RECREATION AREA...THE STILES CREEK SHOOTING RANGE...AND THE COMPEAU TRAILHEAD. WATER MAY ALSO CROSS CHENA HOT SPRINGS ROAD AT MILEPOST 36.9 ON FRIDAY MORNING. IN THE STEAMBOAT LANDING SUBDIVISION IN NORTH POLE...WATER LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN AT MINOR FLOOD STAGE INTO THE WEEKEND. SEVERAL INCHES OF WATER WILL CONTINUE TO CROSS FREEMAN ROAD...RIVER WATER WILL INUNDATE SOME YARDS IN THE SUBDIVISION...AND GROUNDWATER FLOODING WILL OCCUR IN SOME BASEMENTS. THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS ALASKA DISTRICT IS CURRENTLY OPERATING THE MOOSE CREEK DAM. FLOOD CONTROL GATES AT THE DAM STARTED REGULATING THE CHENA RIVER A 6:00 PM ON 20 JULY 2016. THE DAM WILL BE REGULATING THE CHENA RIVER SO FLOWS DO NOT EXCEED 12000 CUBIC FEET PER SECOND IN DOWNTOWN FAIRBANKS. DOWNSTREAM FLOOD EFFECTS ON THE CHENA RIVER MAY EXPERIENCE MINOR FLOODING AND GROUNDWATER WILL RISE TO NEAR THE GROUND SURFACE FOR SEVERAL THOUSAND FEET WEST OF THE MOOSE CREEK DAM. RIVER NAVIGATION THROUGH THE MOOSE CREEK DAM IS UNAVAILABLE DURING OPERATIONS. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY.
